Stephen Devassy was born in Ottapaalam [Palakkad district]. Father’s name is P. K. Devassy and mother’s name is Susy. Have one elder sister and one elder brother. He studied in ‘Seventh Day Adventist School, Ottapaalam’. It was a Christian school and had a church next to it. He had a lot of friends. Brother used to go for learning violin. He had interest in percussion. Then, slowly he started to have interest in piano. He started to learn keyboard from the violinist Leslie Peter in 6th grade. Used to play the piano in the church next to the school he studied in his free time. Father used to give encouragement. Father used to work in a Gulf country. When he was in 9th grade, his father bought a synthesizer from there. That time there was less availability of a good keyboard with programming functions. He started flunking in his studies because he was totally into the keyboard. He ‘just passed’ his 10th grade. He joined Chetana Music Academy in Thrissur, which is affiliated to Trinity School of Music [London]. This was the place where he learned more deeply about keyboard. He completed his eighth grade as top ranker in Asia with 92.2%.
Stephen's break came when he was just 18 through Johny Sagariga for whom he did the music orchestration of two songs in the album `Ishtamannu.'
Afterwards he got his first offer to play keyboard. Hariharan’s assistant Venkit was his friend. So, he started playing keyboard for Hariharan’s ghazal programs. Everyone who were playing the instrument were north Indians. He was the only south Indian there. Then he started playing keyboard for Hariharan’s every single ghazal concert.
He started a band when he was 19. Franco Simon [singer] and Sangeeth [not our Sangeeth] was a part of it. They called it ‘SEVEN’. They music directed and sang in lot of albums and devotional albums. They released an album – ‘YEH ZINDAGI’, since it was a Hindi pop band.
He is the keyboardist of a gospel band called ‘REX BAND’. Through this band he played in front of the late Pope John Paul II in Toronto on World Youth Day. Music director and SS music trainer Alphonse Joseph is also a part of this band. His first solo album was released by this band. He music directed and played the piano in the album – ‘DIFFERENT VIBES’ released by this band.
He has also accompanied the violin maestro L. Subramanian at the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival. He was given an opportunity to arrange three of the songs sung by Kavitha Krishnamoorthy for the concert for the London Symphony.
He had arranged and programmed music for a lot of music directors like A. R. Rahman, Vidhyasagar, Ousepachan, Mohan Sitara etc. for their films and programs. He have done the music arrangement for Vidyasagar's `Majaa,' and `Thampi' and Mohan Sitara's `Nammal'. He had done it for lot of Hindi albums too. One of the devotional albums he did is – ‘SACRED CHANTS OF KOSMIC MUSIC’, which has now released five volumes. He also sang a song ‘PURINCHIRICHA PURINCHIRICHA’ from the film Emttan Mahan, music directed by Vidhyasagar.
He had worked with Johnny Sagariga. Johnny introduced him to Malayalam film industry. Stephen music directed the Malayalam film ‘HARIHARAN PILLAI HAPPYANNU’. The film went flop.
Now, he is the background keyboardist of a program –‘SUPERSTAR’ of Amrita TV.
Whenever he is with his family, they used to have programs in the church. His sister sings and his brother is a violinist. Now he’s 25 year old. He plays the following types [models] of keyboard:
• KORG TRITON
• KURZWEIL K 2600
• And a modulator
Now, he’s one of the highest paid keyboardists in India. He is now settled in Chennai.
